Montréal IDENT experiment focuses on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The positive relationship between productivity and functional diversity can be related to complementarity and selection effects. The complementarity of resource use is linked to species functional traits. One strong assumption of trait-based ecology is that differences between species are more important than differences between individuals. However, functional trait variation at the intraspecific level could explain some positive or negative species responses to an increase in functional diversity.
In this project, we want to measure four species functional traits, at both the species and individual level, in order to explain species complementarity and selection effect in mixtures of increasing functional diversity.
