A strong delegation from the PaqLab and the Urban Forest Chair at the Canadian Urban Forest Conference
As the Winnipeg 2024 edition of the Canadian Urban Forest Conference officially comes to a close, the PaqLab is extremely proud of its large representation at the event. In addition to David and Elyssa who gave conference talks, Vanessa, Sarah T, Johanna, Charlotte, Emma and Davia all presented posters of their graduate projects! The PaqLab team (who are all members themselves) was also joined by other students of the Urban Forest Research Chair: Essivi, Hannah and Sarah I.
We now look forward to the 2026 edition in Quebec City to continue showcasing all the exciting and innovating work we are undertaking on our quest to better understand and manage the urban forests that surround us!
Elyssa presents at the Canadian Urban Forestry Conference about her work on why mature trees are removed in cities
On the first day of talks, Elyssa Cameron presented some preliminary results from one of the Urban Forest Research Chair's newer projects: understand why we remove mature urban trees in order to better help protect them. She spoke not only of the reasons why we remove trees, but also some general recommendations on how we can prevent avoidable removals in the future. Fundamentally, she expressed the need and necessity for funding programs targetted towards the survivial and maintenance of newly planted trees, as well as the protection of mature ones, and not just planting trees.
It was a large turnout and a very engaging crowd who all expressed a great interest in the project. Great job Elyssa and a huge thank you to Daniel Lesieur of the CEF for helping to set up the registry for felled trees that started this whole venture - and to the cities of Montreal, Quebec, Repentigny and Granby who have already contributed data to the project!

Bravo Sarah!
Insect sampling complete for 2024!
After a full field season, Jérémy has officially packed up his traps and said goodbye to the Montreal summer. Jérémy’s project aims to understand the role and biodiversity of insects across the city. Very little is known about insect biogeography and biodiversity within cities and this ambitious project will hopefully help fill some of those knowledge gaps.
So what are the next steps? Months of molecular analysis and continuing to write his article on a new method to extract insect DNA! Wish him luck.
