Vanessa is happy to share the first published paper of her PhD research: Trees from afar: Urban tree classification using mobile terrestrial LiDAR and street view images, featured in Urban Forestry & Urban Greening.
Together with her team, they developed a unique data treatment and deep learning pipeline to identify the most common street tree taxa in Southern Quebec cities from mobile laser scanning (MLS; specifically mobile terrestrial LiDAR and street view images). They demonstrate that MLS can provide a rapid and cost-effective initial inventory of public and private trees, which can be used for planning and maintenance of the urban forest.

Have you ever spotted birds eating the dead insects off cars?
The lab is thrilled to participate in a co-operative global study on urban bird foraging habits led by Jukka Jokimäki and his research team at the University of Lapland (Finland). His team have documented evidence of birds eating the squished insects off cars in Finland over the past few years and are now trying, with this new co-operative study, to elucidate if this observed behaviour is an indication of a new adaptation of bird species to urbanization.

Johanna hired by Ville en Vert as their newest project manager!
Recent graduate Johanna Arnet, who worked on the spatio-temporal temperature variation within the urban forest, has accepted a position as a project manager for Ville en Vert. Though we are very sad to see you go, we are thrilled to see that your skills and passion will be put to good use in greening the city.

Congrats to recent graduates Emma Bacon and Davia Yahia on their new jobs!
The PaqLab is incredibly proud to watch these two women head off to new and exciting things. Emma landed a position as a project manager at Canopée and Davia Yahia began her new job with the City of Montreal’s Ahuntsic borough. What a wonderful collaboration between the Urban forest research chair and its partners for those within its network to be able to hire highly qualified graduautes - partnership at its best!
You will both be missed and we can’t wait to watch your future achievements unfold.
Sarah et Vanessa présentent leurs projets de doctorat au colloque du CEF
Félicitations Sarah et Vanessa pour vos excellentes présentations lors du 19e colloque du CEF à Québec. Vanessa a présenté ses résultats de son 1e chapitre qui portait sur la classification des arbres urbains à partir du LiDAR terrestre mobile. Sarah a mis en vedette le travail de son 2e chapitre qui illustre les patrons de pollen dans des villes pancanadiennes au cours des 30 dernières années. Bravo les filles pour ce bel effort!
